Andormanaged to completely change how fans look at Star Wars. When the series is conflated with lightsabre, space magic, Jedi, Sith, and the works, it is often forgotten that Star Wars is about one thing and one thing alone: rebellion in the face of oppression.

Andor

Andorwas one of the best projects to come out under Disney, taking every gritty approach to the world of Star Wars, being a spin-off ofRogue One. WhileRogue Onehas its fair share of scenes with the likes of Vader, still dribbling into the fantasy side of the IP,Andormanaged to make the galaxy far, far away a lot more familiar.

Diego Luna drew from his personal life for the character of Andor

Diego Luna, when the show was first coming out, sat down withRolling Stoneto talk about how his character drew from some parts of his life, with a focus on his Mexican heritage. He said:

I come from a country that has the longest border with the States. We are the connection for good and bad of a whole continent with richness, power, opportunity. This place is built on people moving, trying to survive, escaping violence, escaping regimes that are violent or tend to marginalize people. And to me, there is an opportunity to ground that character into something that feels very real.

Diego Luna || Andor

Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor was an immigrant to the main landscape of the story, which allowed the actor to relate to what the character has been feeling under the regime of The Empire, which destroyed his homeworld. Luna’s portrayal of Andor remains one of the grittiest characters in the Star Wars canon, digging deep into what it truly means to rebel against a power as massive and foreboding as The Empire.

Star Wars needs more content likeAndor

Star Wars,when it first came out in theatres, was a simple fantasy narrative set in space, that had cookie-cutter plots and characters that catered to archetypes above everything else. However, withAndor, the IP can be considered to have truly matured, being grounded in the world ofStar Wars,and talking about all the implications of the setup that madeStar Warsso enjoyable.

Andor Season 2 Disney+ Release Date Confirmed: Can Diego Luna Save Star Wars from Itself?

Andorcould serve as the blueprint for what the franchise could look at going forward, while also staying true to its Western and Samurai film roots. There is also the fact thatAndoris one of the few stories that came out of Disney that has managed to actually capture the attention of the audience in a positive way.

It remains to be seen what trajectory the show takes going forward, butAndorhas made it clear thatStar Warscould merit some stories that actually dwell on the nitty-gritty of rebellion and its implications.
