In Hollywood history, only a few films have left a lasting impact like the 1999Fight Club. With characters like Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden, Helena Bonham Carter’s Marla Singer, and even Edward Norton’s The Narrator, the film has gone on to become a cult classic. However, the David Fincher movie was not always seen as an iconic one. In fact, when it first premiered 25 years ago, critics who got to see it at the Venice Film Festival were not too impressed.
With the film’s rather edgy behavior, the infamous midnight screening of the Pitt movie ended with the director and actors being booed as the curtains closed.

Just last year, the iconic director, David Fincher made his way back to the Venice Film Festival for the first time in 24 years. While he debuted his Netflix film,The Killerat the event, the 62-year-old could not help but look back on his last appearance at the festival. In an interview withThe New York Times, he recalled how he was booted out of his 1999 debut ofBrad Pitt’sFight Club.
I came here with a little film called Fight Club.
Fincher recalled,“We were fairly run out of town for being fascists.”However, the director claimed to have seen the infamous reaction coming. He stated,“I looked down and the youngest person in our row was Giorgio Armani. I was like, ‘I’m not sure the guest list is the right guest list for this.’”Unfortunately, his hunch turned out to be right.

The movie’s graphic depiction of violence and cultural timing threw most of the viewers and critics in the audience. In fact, it even leftHelena Bonham Carterdoubting the filmwhen she first read the script. However, Pitt and his co-star, Edward Norton had a completely different experience at the premiere.
Brad Pitt recalled the infamous premiere
In 2019, Brad Pitt took over the spotlight with his comedy western,Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.While the film ended up getting a completely different reaction at its premiere than his 1999 film,Fight Club, the actor could not help but look back on the confounding experience. In an episode ofthe WTF pod, the now 60-year-old ended up taking his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio on a trip down memory lane.
It was the Venice Film Festival and it was a midnight screening. For some reason, we thought it would be a good idea to smoke a joint before.
With Pitt and his co-star,Edward Nortonbeing seated next to the festival head, they had a first-hand account of everything that went wrong. The actor stated,“The movie starts. First joke comes up, and it’s crickets. It’s dead silence. Another joke, and it’s just dead silent.” He added,“The more it happened, the funnier it got to Edward and I. So we just start laughing. We’re the a**h*les in the back laughing at our own jokes. The only ones laughing.”

The duo seemed to find their film hilarious. However, Pitt claimed that the festival head was extremely unimpressed. In fact, the Babylon star even added,“At some point, it gets to Helena Bonham Carter’s line when she says, ‘I haven’t been f*cked like that since grade school,’ and I watched the festival guy who had been squirming the whole time get up and leave.”
Although that might have left most actors dreading what that meant, the star and Norton only found that even funnier given their heavenly state.
