It’s one of those times in gaming history where we all remember where we were whenCyberpunk 2077launched in 2020. The much anticipated CD Projekt Red dystopian title had been on everyone’s wish list since its trailer dropped at E3 2018, but unfortunately, the hype didn’t live up to its expectations on PS4 and Xbox One. Riddled with bugs, framerate issues, and unfinished mechanics, Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update finally changed the once unplayable game for the better, breathing new life into its now incredible world.

But, according to its senior quest designer, without the initial downfall of Cyberpunk 2077, its DLC,Phantom Liberty, would not have been a triumph without development lessons learned from its overwhelming negative response at launch.

The mod has been in development since 2021 and is aiming to bring the equivalent of GTA Online to Cyberpunk 2077.

In an interview withTheGamer, CD Projekt’s senior quest designer, Paweł Sasko, said they believed that the studio’s latest DLC, Phantom Liberty, wouldn’t have been as big of a success as it was without Cyberpunk 2077’s “negative reception”.

Sasko chalks this down to the backlash which forced the company to change how it developed the DLC for the better, and that the studio was able to learn from previous mishaps and development chaos.

“Phantom Liberty worked significantly better at its launch because we completely changed the production style, something that couldn’t have been possible if the initial reception of the game wasn’t as negative as it was,” Sasko expressed. “It changed me and us as a studio.”

Thankfully, due to the team’s hard work to get the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion right, Phantom Liberty’s launch was a great success. Sasko is also leading their incredible skills to CD Projekt’s next game in development in The Witcher series, still codenamed Polaris, as an associate game director, and we can’t wait to see what new and improved mechanics and systems have been used to, yet again, put CD Projekt’s games on the map.
