Dave Filoniworked with George Lucas onStar Wars: The Clone Wars. The animated series revived the fan-favorite prequel trilogy villain Darth Maul who was killed off during a battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, the series added further depth to the character and also explored his backstory.
In an interview withthe officialStar Warswebsite, Filoni talked about using the villain sparingly while juggling the stories of other characters. The writer-director explained:

I think that we balance it pretty well, because we try not to overkill things. [We were] all pretty aware, the writing team, of trying to keep things balanced. Because we always feel like characters have a certain shelf-life.
Filoni made the above statement, revealing that he was aware offan expectations surrounding certain characters. However, he did not want to overuse Maul.

Instead, Filoni added that being a superfan of the franchise he understood why fans wanted to watch Maul appear across the season. However, he intended to do something more dramatically intense with the character, especially in the fifth season, resulting in Filoni subverting fan expectations with Maul’s appearances.

Although the show’s fifth season used Maul sparingly while still making dramatic progression for his arc, Filoni admitted that one of the character’s biggest moments was directly demanded by franchise creatorGeorge Lucas.
In season 5, Maul’s former master Darth Sidious learns of his survival and confronts him in Madalore, leading to a lightsaber duel between the two. Filoni admitted that the idea to have a duel between the former Sith apprentice and his master came directly from Lucas.

Filoni made the above statement, revealing that while Lucas came up with the idea of a fight between Sidious and Maul, the legendary filmmaker wasn’t involved with the actual direction.

The current CCO of Lucasfilm explained that Lucas is involved with the crafting of the general story beats for the season. However, Lucas completely trusted Filoni and the writers to get the details right, resulting in the creative team having more freedom to experiment.
