Gearbox Software’slooter-shooter franchiseBorderlandshas a feature film releasing next month by Eli Roth with a star-studded cast in tow, despite the movie adaptation being on few fans’ bingo cards. Unfortunately, early reviews do not receive the project favorably, but the game’s community is not surprised by the criticisms.
Lead Cate Blanchett, who will be playing outlaw Lilith, previously discussed how her role in the production was fueled by“Covid madness”and the Australian actor will be joined by Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black voicing Claptrap. The previously released trailer promised high-octane action harboring the videogame series’ niche comedic tone, and that particular element isn’t resonating with movie buffs so far.

Early Reviews For Borderlands Slams “Terrible” And “Unfunny” Material
The reliable industry insider, Daniel Richtman, recently shared comments filtered out from Borderlands’ early previews in their Patreon post (Thanks, @SmallScreenCo), and the opinions were anything but positive.
Early reactions consisted of viewers calling the movie “terrible” and “unfunny”, despite the promotional material for the adaptation leaning heavily on Borderlands’ staple, but often hard to swallow, tone. However, these initial impressions failed to shake some corners of the gaming community.

One account posted on social media, saying, “I can’t believe it. Finally. An Accurate video game adaptation.” In the same vein, another onlooker said, “Terrible and unfunny sounds exactly like Borderlands.”
To give context, another comment highlighted, “Borderlands humor has always been the kind that can really only work in a medium like a video game or maybe an animation.” The videogame series has often been described as having “cringy humor”, which is not going to be for everyone. However, the fandom is all too familiar with this element and the movie may stay entirely faithful to the games in this regard.

Of course, a slew of negative comments populated social media as well, stating that no one asked for this adaption to be green-lit in the first place, joining a separate comment saying, “Doesn’t surprise me since Borderlands is pretty much carried by its gameplay, can’t really do that with a movie.”
Most of the community agreed thatBorderlands 2was a decent and charming game, in response to several gamers calling the shooter out for being generally bad. However, there were several fans onboard to back up the franchise, saying, “It’s funny when people analyze Borderlands as anything deeper than just a fun, surface-level looter shooter game.”
Borderlands as a whole divides the gaming community, with many seeing the series as a product of the time with millennial humor that doesn’t stand up in today’s culture. But perhaps the movie adaptation will be a fun ride regardless.
