It’s hard to remember that theBorderlandsfranchise once had a somewhat serious tone amidst its over-the-top presentation. While the original game’s plot was a MacGuffin, it didn’t fully embrace its toilet humor until later installments.
Borderlands 4is looking to return to that serious tone of pastBorderlands gamesand narrative director Sam Winkler is leading the way.Winklerresponded to fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the direction of the game’s tone.

That’s not to say the game will lack humor. Winkler proclaims thatBorderlands 4isGearbox’s most ambitious game to date, and he’s been able to work with “some of the funniest people I know as contract writers.”
So there you go. There will still beBorderlandshumor; just don’t expect the toilet humor from the franchise’s last entry. Then again, Winkler and Gearbox made jokes on their accounts that may feel right at home, so who knows?

After appearing at this year’s The Game Awards, Gearbox confirmed that the game will see a return of two-player split-screen co-op. We’ll also see four new Vault Hunters traverse the world of Kairos for epic loot and glory.
The game’s main villain, the Timekeeper, is described as “a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet.”
