After nearly six years,Fallout 76is finally introducing a long-awaited feature: text chat. Players have been requesting a text chat feature to improve communication for a long time. Despite the game’s emphasis on multiplayer interaction, communication was restricted to proximity voice chat and emotes for years.

This new text chat system, currently available in the Public Test Server (PTS), incorporates text-to-speech and speech-to-text functionality. While the intention to make communication more inclusive is commendable, some fans are left scratching their heads. A simple text box would have sufficed, but Bethesda decided to do things a little differently.

Fallout 76Finally Lets You Text Chat, But With Your Voice

For a game that has relied heavily on local voice chat and emotes since its release, the absence of a text chat system has been a problem. Players often find it hard to communicate, especially in public events or large groups. The new feature just introduced on the Public Test Server (PTS) seems to address this issue but with a twist.

The new system works by using AI to convert text into speech and vice versa. For instance, when a player types a message, the game broadcasts it to nearby players using an AI-generated voice. This is a new native feature foranyFalloutgame.

While this may be a useful tool for those who need it, many players were hoping for a simpler, more traditional text chat feature, as seen in countless other multiplayer games.

The response from theFallout 76community has been mixed. Some players have praised Bethesda for taking steps toward inclusivity, as the text-to-speech and speech-to-text options cater to gamers with disabilities. However, others feel that the absence of a regular text chat function is a glaring oversight.

After all, even smaller mods created by fans have already managed to add this feature. Players argue that after six years of updates, a simple text box should be standard in an online multiplayer game.

It’s Still In Beta and Subject to Change, So We Could See Changes

Despite the concerns, there are some advantages to this new system. Players who struggle with voice chat due to disabilities now have a method of communication that works for them. This accessibility-focused feature also provides a layer of immersion for some, as players can now interact with others without breaking character by using a robotic voice.

But for those who were expecting a simple, functional chat system, the current implementation feels like an overcomplication of something that should have been straightforward. Giventhe game’s recent comeback, players want more good updates.

Another issue raised by players is that the text-to-speech feature feels overly localized. Only nearby players can hear the broadcasted messages, limiting its usefulness in large-scale events. A more traditional chat system would allow for better coordination without needing to rely on proximity.

Despite these concerns, Bethesda finally testing and improving the system through the PTS is a positive sign. Players have already provided feedback, and there’s hope that the final version of the feature will address some of these issues.

Many players also acknowledge that the integration of such a system, even if imperfect, fills a significant gap that has been present since the game’s launch in 2018. With further refinement, the text chat system could become a valuable addition to the game.
