Should You Help Rugan Or Open The Caravan Strongbox In Baldur’s Gate 3
So there are three possible outcomes for the Find The Missing Shipment quest: you get a unique bow, fight a boss, or fight with all the people at the Zhentarim hideout. Below we will go into detail about what happens based on your actions.
Helping Rugan And Delivering The Caravan Strongbox
The first obvious choice is to deliver the Caravan Strongbox to Zarys at theZhentarim hideout. This can be done either by stealing the box from Rugan (or looting it after he and his companion have died) or by convincing him to let you deliver it after saving him.
If Rugan is alive when you enter the hideout to turn the box in, he will vouch for you. Otherwise, you will need to convince the Zhentarim that you mean no harm with a Persuasion check. Turning the box in causes Zarys to reward you with Harold, a unique bow with +1 enhancement, and merchants in the hideout will now sell you better gear. This is probably the best possible outcome for this quest.
Opening The Caravan Strongbox
If you decide to open the Caravan Strongbox, you will getIron Flask. It’s a special item containing a powerful creature you can set free to fight enemies for you, however, it will also be hostile to your party. Defeating this creature does not result in gold or any unique loot.
Peeking Inside The Caravan Strongbox
If you break the seal to see what’s inside the shipment, and then return it to Zarys in that state, there is a third outcome. She will become hostile to the party, along with the whole Zhentarim Hideout. This leaves you no option but to fight them. This only occurs of course if you give her the box - you can open the box and keep it for yourself without the NPCs at the Zhentarim Hideout being any the wiser.
Overall, saving Rugan and delivering the shipment on his behalf is the best outcome for this quest. It offers the most interesting rewards, and it is typically not too difficult to complete. Even during an evil playthrough, the Zhentarim are good allies to have because of their lack of moral scruples and rare wares.
