Avatar: The Last Airbenderhas one of the most well-constructed magic systems of any modern media, with the creators of the show going to great lengths to imbue it with meaning and narrative significance. However, there was one aspect of the system that did not necessarily sit well with fans given that it felt like a cop-out for a show that took an entire season to wrestle with the dilemma which it solved.

ATLA Uncle Iroh

However, a theory suggests that the creators of the show had cleverly teased the ability that a few fans have called a cop-out, thanks to the way it depicted General Iroh’s strengths and abilities. Iroh has been routinely depicted as one of the most powerful characters in the world ofAvatar: The Last Airbender, so it was fitting to have him as the character who figured out the first step to energy-bending.

Iroh’s philosophy about harmony among elements could be the first step towards understanding energy-bending

General Iroh has always been depicted as one of the wisest characters inATLA, being one of the few members of the Fire Nation who respect the cultures that his nation was so hell-bent on destroying. It is because of this respect that Iroh can develop one of the most devastating abilities in the series: lightning redirection, and lightning generation. Developing it by looking at the Water Tribes and their bending arts, Iroh, according to a theory posted onReddit, could have figured out the first steps towards Energybending.

The theory essentially states that what Iroh was able to do as just a Firebender, was taken to the next level by The Avatar, who would have access to other elements for bending. This not only does away with criticism that energy bending was a last-minute cop-out invented by the creators but gives it narrative credence as something that was teased from the beginning.

A still from Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last AirbenderSeason 2 on Netflix can do a better job of setting up energy-bending

Netflix’sAvatar: The Last Airbenderhas already been at the center of a host of criticisms. While the show has been a step up from the films, there are still some things that are lacking from the show. However, should the show give itself the kind of time that will allow it to blossom into a great live-action adaptation, it can improve upon the very, very few shortcomings of the animated series, such as teasing energy bending way before the finale of the show has come.

Despite Its Flaws, Netflix’s Avatar The Last Airbender’s One Decision Could Hugely Pay off in Season 2

Netflix might be working very hard to retain IPs that can keep the general audience interested in its shows, such that its audience size is unaffected by the various shows that are coming to an end on the platform, likeStranger Things,Umbrella Academy, andThe Witcher.
