AI: The Somnium Files creator and scenario writer Kotaro Uchikoshistated in a recent interview(translated viaNoisy Pixel) that he is excited about making a third game in the series following the warm reception in both Japan and overseas, and he is also thinking about making a story for those who want to know more about Date and Hitomi Sagan’s relationship.
The mystery adventure game series is currently composed of two titles — AI: The Somnium Files, and AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative — and the main character changes from the detective Kaname Date in the first game to the young Mizuki Date (Kaname’s adopted daughter) in the second game. The circumstances involving how they meet involve the death of Mizuki’s mother Hitomi, but the mother’s relationship with Kaname prior to her death is not clearly touched upon in the games.

Originally, there was supposed to be a romance route between the two, and Hitomi was supposed to be the main heroine, but the director loved the character of Iris and rewrote the scenario to feature her as the main character instead, as per theAnime Expo 2019 panel.In another translated interview, the director touches on the main theme of each Somnium (The Dream World), and how it intended to portray a variety of themes such as puzzle, horror, fairy-tale fantasy, and even a culinary showdown.
The defining aspect of the Somnium Files series is the ability to find clues and solve mysteries within the Somnium or the world that exists within the subconsciousness of a person. These worlds are shaped by the memories and dreams of people, so they often portray irrational concepts or gimmicks such as defying the rules of gravity or invisible barriers. But if the players interact with these gimmicks, like puzzles, they would reach the truth trapped inside the person’s mind.
Kotaro Uchikoshi is a renowned visual writer known for his work on the Zero Escape series, and his writing style often includes science fiction elements and philosophical themes. In addition to The Somnium Files series, he is currently working alongside theDanganronpacreatorKazutaka Kodakaon the Tribe Nine IP, which will be introduced as an anime, and followed by a webtoon and a 3D Action RPG for phones in the future.
