George R.R. Martin’sThe Winds of Winteris nowhere near finished, yet the famed author contemplates writing a new book based on a scrapped HBO spinoff. The success ofGame of Thronespaved the way for more Westeros-related shows to hit our screens, and while some of them are on the way, others remained on the shelf.

The vast world of the fantasy lore enables the author to create more stories, and it’s safe to say that Martin can write more books if he wants to. Now, the point is that he wants to explore a subject that was supposed to have its own adaptation, and since he already expressed willingness to tackle this, HBO might as well revive the spinoff.
George R.R. Martin wants to write a book about Braavos
In an entry onGeorge R.R. Martin’s site,Not a Blog, he spoke about his interest in giving an abandoned project a new life through his writing. Apparently, a Braavos-centered spinoff was in development until the studio decided not to push for it. Then, the author surprisingly revealed that he wanted to turn this idea into a full-fledged book.
One of these days I need to write that story about Braavos we were developing for HBO. They shelved that one a couple of years back, alas, but that does not mean I won’t go back to it… after WINDS OF WINTER is done, of course.

It’s a shame that HBO decided not to pick up this project because even though the final season ofGame of Throneswas a colossal mess, it still held a legacy that no other show could beat. Its success paved the way forHouse of the DragonandA Knight of the Seven Kingdomsto become possible. Surely, they can squeeze in one more show in their timetable.

Besides, the original show owed fans a lot when it came to the Braavos part. While an important aspect of Arya Stark’s arc took place in the city, we didn’t get to explore the nooks and crannies of it. Even the Faceless Men storyline proved to be underwhelming.
Why HBO should reviveBraavosspinoff
Braavos plays a significant role in the trade and banking business in Westeros, but this isn’t the only exciting part. When Arya met Jaqen H’ghar, he was revealed to be an assassin from the order of the Faceless Men, the guild that resides in the House of Black and White.
This was not fully fleshed out in the original series since itfocused on Arya’s training. She also wasn’t too aware of the inner workings of the society, so the spinoff show is a great opportunity to go in-depth in this aspect.

Martin’s intention to write about Braavos is a great way to expand theGame of Thronesuniverse. It may take a long time before he gets to write about this culturally diverse city, but if HBO decides to revive this, then Martin will have more motivation to finishThe Winds of Winter.
Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
