Activision Blizzard is one of the biggest companies currently owned by Microsoft and handles some of the biggest franchises, such asCall of Duty,Diablo,Overwatch, andWorld of Warcraft. While there is a lot to be said about those games, it hasn’t stopped Activision Blizzard from expanding.

Even now, the company is looking to grow not only its list of games but also its studio portfolio. We now know of a new studio developed by the company that is going to tackle a beloved genre of games, a prospect that is equally exciting and worrying.

Over the years, the company has released games that span across genres. From casual titles such asHearthstoneto super competitive ones likeOverwatch, Activision Blizzard is a very versatile company. It is now looking to branch out even further, this time into a completely new genre with a brand new studio.

Elsewhere Entertainment was created to develop a “narrative-based and genre-defining AAA franchise.” A few days ago,we reported on how a recent job listing from Activision Blizzardhinted at the company aiming to build a new Soulslike title. The launch of this new studio is another hint that this project may already be in the pipeline.

This game is rumored to give competition to theSoulsseries by featuring legendary boss fights that will be remembered for years.
This prompted many fans to speak out against this decision, expressing not only their frustration but also worry about the company venturing into such a beloved genre of games. Fans clearly do not have much confidence in Activision Blizzard’s capability to handle such titles.

The New Studio Comes After Layoff Announcements
Opening a new studio may seem like a cause for celebration, but not everything is going smoothly in the Microsoft camp. The companyrecently shut down several Bethesda Softworks studiosand also laid off many Activision Blizzard employees. The gaming industry has been going through a fairly rough patch, so the new studio is coming in the wake of somber news.
$76B for Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, Yet Xbox’s Latest Studio Closures Were Cost-cutting Measures Just As They Reportedly Looked to Hire More Staff for New Projects
If Elsewhere Entertainment is going down the Soulslike route, then they would do well to learn from the master himself. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s, the man behind the genre, efforts are reflected in the experience these titles offer. For a game to succeed in this genre, it is essential to adopt not just the tropes of the genre but Miyazaki’s approach to game creation.
Not much else is known about the new studio. We don’t even have an official logo yet; Activision Blizzard simply provided a title card with the definition of ‘elsewhere’ as a stand-in. Only time will reveal what new game will come from this venture.

From understanding the complexities of a multilayer narrative to the simply joy of “big gun go boom”, my goal is to capture all the emotions in between and put them down in an engaging manner.
