Game of Thronesused to be one of the biggest television shows in history, yet it turned out to be miserably disappointing by the time it reached its last season. However, the show undeniably had some good parts that continue to remain famous, evoking shock, awe, and endless debate even after all this time.

On the other hand, we haveits prequel,House of the Dragon, which has so far failed to deliver its own defining moments. Instead of making history likeGame of Thrones, it fumbled, especially due to its one plotline that George R.R. Martin had already predicted way back to showrunner Ryan Condal.
George R. R. Martin PredictedHouse of the DragonWould Ruin Its Own Defining Moment
In the world of cinema, it is pretty easy to mess up when it comes to projects based on widely acknowledged and loved written material. Given the vastness of written text and its ability to be as expansive as possible, shows likeGame of Thronesare often criticized for not being faithful to the source material. It is a predicament that evenGOT’sprequel seriesHouse of the Dragonis suffering from.
Why George R. R. Martin Can’t Finish The Winds of Winter – Turns Out He Couldn’t Finish a Monologue For Stephen Colbert Either In this Hilarious Skit Addressing Fan Criticism
While fans are always quick to point out its shortfalls and mistakes, even the brain behind the tale akaGeorge R.R. Martinhas not held back at making his opinions known. In a now-deletedblog post(viaUSA Today), Martin revealed he had already warned showrunnerRyan Condalabout not making the showmore in line with the bookBlood and Cheeseand particularly objected the show not featuring Queen Helaena’s other son Maelor, and her not being able to choose which of her two sons (Maelor and Jaehaerys) will be killed by Blood and Cheese.
George R.R. Martin says he argued against Ryan Condal’s changes to Blood and Cheese in#HouseOfTheDragoncompared to his book, FIRE AND BLOOD:“When Ryan Condal first told me what he meant to do, ages ago (back in 2022, might be) I argued against it, for all these reasons. I did…pic.twitter.com/mGNowRCZ02

As Martin revealed, his objections were put to rest by Condal assuring himwe were not losing Prince Maelor, simply postponing him. Queen Helaena could still give birth to him in season three, presumably after getting with child late in season two.Condal’s explanation (which Martin presumed was made back in 2022) not only made it seem like Prince Maelor will be included in future seasons but also cited budget implications which put Martin’s doubt at rest.
And Ryan had what seemed to be practical reasons for it; they did not want to deal with casting another child, especially a two-year old toddler. Kids that young will inevitably slow down production, and there would be budget implications. Budget was already an issue on HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, it made sense to save money wherever we could.

However, we all know how that went down for as the author statedthe prince’s birth was no longer just going to be pushed back to season three. He was never going to be born at all. This plot decision has turned out to be one of the most controversial decisions of the show, making the overall storyline and ‘Helaena’s Choice’ weak and bleak.
Fans React to George R.R. Martin’s Shocking Revelation aboutHouse of the Dragon
House of the Dragonlists George R.R. Martin as the co-creator along with showrunner Ryan Condal. So whenthe series took ample creative decisions, particularly those involving Blood and Cheese, fans also called out Martinfor letting it all happen. However, the author has made his side of the story known in a now-deleted blog post.
“The roots of my fantasy ideas…”: Not George R R Martin but 1 Other Famous Fantasy Writer Is to Thank for Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Bloodborne, Elden Ring, and Dark Souls Ideas
Not only did theGame of Thronesauthor criticize Condal’s vision and execution and his decision to cut Maelor but he also went on to reveal the showrunners’ plan for the series’ third season. As his comments went viral on social media, fans were quick to side with Martin and blasted Condal.
Most of them called out Condal for ruiningBlood and Cheeseand potentially preventingHouse of the Dragonfrom having its own defining and stand-out moment similar toGame of Thrones‘Red Weddingevent.

It made NO sense to change the “Sophie’s choice” of blood and cheese. None. Budgetary reasons? Slowing production? By how much could casting a two year possibly implicate either when it sacrifices what could’ve been a scene remembered in the same notoriety as the red wedding but…
Blood and cheese had peak potential..But show runners just ruined that whole chunk 😞

It’s ok to be deviated from a source material like GOT because it dealt with present day Westeros. But with HOTD, it’s about history and altering history will always leave an effect. He’s right about Maelor. Even as insignificant his character might be, his presence is history
“Save money wherever we could” like spending several episodes in Harrenhal full of exposition lmaoo
I’m prepared to be disappointed and underwhelmed. Ryan Condal and his writers too weak to do this series justice.
As fans went on to unleash their fury against Ryan Condal and the crew, HBO and Condal were quick to respond to the now-deleted criticism (via USA Today). However, it seems the damage has already been done and will certainly impact the future of the series.
House of the Dragonis available to be streamed on HBO Max.
