Via the latest episode of one of his podcasts,Last of the Nintendogs, insider Jeff Grubb made an interesting claim regarding the near future of theLegend of Zeldafranchise. He made it very clear that he wasn’t making any affirmations or speculations about anything specific and simply relayed exactly what he was told from his sources, which is the following, “something not related toTears of the Kingdomis happening with Zelda later this year.”

Though undoubtedly a vague statement, it still provides a lot of interesting tidbits, if true. Just the fact that there could be another Zelda project in the works (that isn’t Tears of the Kingdom DLC) and that it could potentially be coming soon is quite alluring for Zelda fans. It’s worth noting that we really can’t know what “happening” means in this context, as Grubb doesn’t either.

He later specified that “maybe it gets announced later this year… and it does come out early next year,” repeating that he stated exactly what he knows, which is simply that “something is happening” with the belovedNintendofranchise. An announcement this year and release next year would be the more likely option of the two, as Nintendo’s Fall season is already rather packed.

Super Mario Bros. Wonderis releasing in October, while theSuper Mario RPGremake is releasing in November. Nintendo doesn’t usually have multiple big-name releases in the same month, nor do they tend to have big-name releases in December. Furthermore, it’s already July, and a direct just happened last month, so it’s unlikely they’ll reveal something now to drop in September or something along those lines.

If the info Grubb received is accurate, then the most likely scenario is a reveal in Fall (Grubb understands that the usual September Nintendo Direct is happening this year), and a release next year. There are manyrumors and hintsthat the Switch’s successor may be releasing in 2024, but Nintendo has yet to confirm anything.

When it comes to what this Zelda project could hypothetically be, remasters for 2002’s The Wind Waker and 2006’s Twilight Princess on the Nintendo Switch have been requested and rumored for years. Grubb specifically stated that he doesn’t know if this new rumor has any connection to those games. The Link’s Awakening remake released in 2019, so it’s possible Nintendo has another smaller-scale 2D Zelda project in the works.
