TheMummyseries has certainly seen highs and great falls. Where Brendan Fraser’s films were a cultural masterpiece and an iconic part of Hollywood, a lot has changed for the franchise since then. Tom Cruise’s film has been regarded as one of the worst attempts at a reboot, completely losing sight of what made Fraser’s films work.

Since it has been recently announced that a new reboot for the franchise is on its way, withEvil Dead Risedirector Lee Cronin directing it, there are a lot of lessons that he can learn from the failure of Cruise’s film.
AMummycinematic universe in one film?
One of the most criticized aspects ofTom Cruise’sfilm was the fact that it tried to set up an entire cinematic universe in one film. Instead of trying to first make a good standalone film, they tried to set up multiple future projects in one movie, resulting in fans just getting confused.
New Mummy Movie in the Works Can Make Everyone’s Brendan Fraser-Tom Cruise Dream Scenario a Reality
Lee Cronin’sMummyrebootshould instead focus on first trying to make a good film and then potentially looking at future possibilities.
Dark themes in an optimistic world
There has always been a layer of optimism inBrendan Fraser’sfilms from the franchise. Everything seems colorful, and audiences can expect a one-liner around just any corner. Tom Cruise’s film deviated from this beloved part of the franchise and turned the movie into a gritty version of the original. It had dark lighting and themes, making it seem outside the series.
The new film should avoid such an approach and focus on an atmosphere like Fraser’s film that actually attracted its audience in the first place.

Lost touch with the archaeological roots of the franchise
One of the most frustrating parts of Cruise’sMummyfilm is the fact that a big chunk of its storyline takes place in a big, industrial city. Although this would work for any other film, this franchise has always found itself surrounded by sand and in the roots of some other culture. It was almost a celebration of archaeology, making one wonder why so many of the scenes from Cruise’s film were set in big buildings with glass windows and technology.
To avoid this mistake, Lee Cronin should ensure that his film is actually set in the country that it is trying to take lore from.

A change in genre that changed the feeling of the franchise
Fraser’sThe Mummyfilms were always put in the genre of action and adventure. However, when Cruise’s movie rolled around, it changed the genre along with it. Being advertised as action and horror, the film completely changed the essence and reputation of the franchise.
‘People in the industry knew who it was about’: Tom Cruise Didn’t Just Beat Harvey Weinstein, He Parodied Him Way Before ‘Me Too’ Scandal
Cronin could fix this with his film, focusing on adventure and less on scaring his viewers.
A better lead character could have aided the film
Although there is no denying that Tom Cruise brought a lot of new viewers to the film, many believe that Brendan Fraser should have always been the lead for the film. The reason for this is that many believe Cruise was trying to bring a different energy to the franchise. Additionally, his character was also very poorly written, with the film forgetting its protagonist while trying to set up a cinematic universe.
With this in mind, Lee Cronin should focus on getting a lead actor who fits the essence of the film instead of someone with a bigger name in the industry.

The newMummyfilm is set to release on August 08, 2025.
