13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, the adventure/strategy hybrid developed by Vanillaware has officially sold in excess of 800,000 units, as announced by PublisherALTUSduring the thirdanniversary livestreamevent.
Original merchandise commemorating the third anniversary of the release is also now available on ATLUS’sJapanese website. There are new illustrations prepared with the high-quality art printing technology “CharaFine”, acrylic stands, mug cups, sticker sets, clear files, keychains, PC cases, and a pouch inspired by the character Iori Fuyusaka’s yellow bag from the game. The inside of the pouch is imprinted with the stuffed rabbit that Iori cherishes, and buyers can write their name on the removable name badge with a permanent pen.

13 Sentinels is a game with a strong emphasis on narrative. In fact, in the 2019Japanese Famitsu Game Awards, the respected Japanese publication rated it higher than Death Stranding in the Best Story and Best Adventure Game categories. It also acts as a homage to many sci-fi works from the 80s, and through the eyes of the thirteen playable characters, players will feel like they are experiencing thirteen different games and genres. There are post-apocalyptic elements, time loops, high school daily life, past and future time travel, and many other twists and turns that make the game feel like there is a plot twist unfolding every five minutes.
The game was first released exclusively in Japan on Playstation 4 in November 2019 before being localized for a release in the west in September 2020. It received a Nintendo Switch port this year in April featuring brand-new content, such as two weapons for each protagonist to use in the “Destruction” strategy segments, in addition to English voice-overs. The extra content exclusive to the Switch version was delivered to the Japanese PS4 version inMay 2022, but currently, there is no news about the arrival of the extra content for PS4 players in the west.
For fans interested in knowing more about the story, or are having trouble tying up the convoluted threads between all the character stories, there are two official books that have been released by ATLUS calledDouble StrandandDouble Helix. They have all the script lines, the hints and feelings behind each spoken word, in addition to the official setting information, and a chronological timeline for all the events that take place in the game’s story.
