Nintendo is usually known for crafting cute lovable characters that make some of the best plushies imaginable, but the Nintendo systems actually include some pretty scary characters. They might not be the scariest characters that have ever appeared in the history of gaming, but they still manage to hold up in some of their scare factors.

Some games on this list will be surprising as these were titles exclusive to Nintendo consoles that had gone deep under the radar especially when it came to the survival horror genre of gaming. These characters are from all over the wide discography that Nintendo has exclusively had.

10Boo - New Super Mario Bros. 2

Boo has appearedin many Super Mario games since his creation inSuper Mario Bros. 3. Most of the time he has two forms with one usually being a cute shy form and the other being a somewhat creepy silly face that will chase after Mario if he looks away. The Boo inNew Super Mario Bros. 2is terrifying though.

The Boo has puffed-up cheeks and his eyes sing deep into his face causing him to look like the ghost of a sleep-deprived serial killer. This Boo is not a pretty sight and had it not had such a slow pace in the game could have added a lot more suspense to Super Mario World 2.

9The Hero’s Shade/Spirit - The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess

The Hero’s Shade or Spirit is actually Link fromOcarina of TimeandMajora’s Mask, but he lives as a spirit that has remorse for not being able to pass on the lessons that he learned. InThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princesshe is able to live out his dreams and train Link from that timeline to be strong enough to defeat Ganondorf.

The most terrifying part about this spirit which is also referred to as The Hero’s Shade is that it appears as the rotted spectral remains of the Hero of Time version of Link.

8The Grudge - Ju-On: The Grudge

The Grudge is scary in the movies and the Wii-exclusive gameJu-On: The Grudgebrought this terrifying ghost into the playable survival horror realm. The only thing that would have made this game truly terrifying was if it would’ve had controls that actually worked. Due to the game’s poor controls, a lot of otherwise scary moments feel unfair.

The Grudge in the game’s design isn’t one that graphically compares to many modern-day games but the way that the game sets up the scares will eventually get the player with one of them.

7Omega Metroid - Metroid: Samus Returns

Omega Metroid’s design inMetroid: Samus Returnslooks like a cross between a star-nosed mole and a giant horrendous alien creature that snacks on human flesh every two hours. It does not mess around and in Metroid: Samus Returns this boss comes back with new punches. In older titles, the boss mainly clawed and did different tail-swipe attacks at Samus, but now it has different laser attacks.

The laser can be an added stressor in the battle as a player will have to learn to read the telegraphs for the different laser attacks. Its giant teeth shooting out of its mouth create the same unsettling terror that the unearthing of a new deep sea fish induces.

6Krossbones - Donkey Kong 64

Krossbones inDonkey Kong 64is one of the scariest enemies to be in any of the Donkey Kong games which is saying a lot because some Donkey Kong games feature alligator bone ghosts. The creepiest thing about this enemy is that it uses part of itself to attack enemies.

Krossbones will use one of its bones with a nail in it to do damage. Krossbones also lose bones every single time that it is hit. Its beady glowing red eyes also induce discomfort as the 3D rendering of the model is all around off-putting.

5Valor - Bayonetta 2

Valor inBayonetta 2, like many bosses in the Bayonetta series, gets continuously more terrifying as a player continues to fight it. The boss starts off as a headless angel that holds its smooth porcelain head as a shield. As the player deals more damage to the boss more parts of it will continue to break off.

The clean image that the boss initially had will slowly begin to get destroyed. The player will slowly rip out the boss' outer shell and reveal the highly demonic appearance that the boss holds underneath its skin and armor.

4Coco - Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Coco inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis really creepy as she claims to want to be an astronaut but nothing that she has in her home would express that. Her house is dull with sand walls, stone decor, and some pots that she has placed around her room. She also claims to be a rabbit with a normal personality but rather looks like the husk of a rabbit.

She is super creepy because of her deep dark facial features but is also kinda cute as she will be constantly reading around town. Listening to Coco speak in the animal crossing dialogue can also be frightening to witness because of the way she looks combined with the otherworldly sounds.

3Octostump Redux - Splatoon 2

Octostump Redux inSplatoon 2is the second appearance of Octostump in the Splatoon series but this time this boss comes back looking like it’s been possessed by demons. It has eyes that radiate with blue irises surrounded by black sclera–the part of the eye that’s supposed to be white.

The boss also looks like it has a bomb strapped to the middle of its face giving it a cyber-genetic feel. It’s not a boss that’s extremely difficult to take out in the game, but one that stands out in how hauntingly different its design is.

2Marx Soul - Kirby Super Star Ultra

For players who are afraid of clowns Marx Soul fromKirby Super StarUltra will give off a sense of discomfort. The boss has different forms where it will do different attacks and create exaggerated faces. The boss will be quick in its attacks and keep changing forms to try and take Kirby out.

The boss has many form changes that come off as being unnaturally eerie. Some of those include Marx Soul splitting its face in half and then turning itself into a jelly that attacks the player. Right before the boss uses its arrow attack has got to be its scariest appearance as the boss sits deranged with its side profile ready to shoot everything it’s got at Kirby.

1Black Guardian - Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

Black Guardian inEternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem already starts off as aterrifying beastthat towers over the character in the game. It looks like a demonic alien entity that’s getting ready to summon evil into the world. It will do different spells against the player and do anything in its power to stop itself from being defeated.

The part of the boss that gets more horrifying is when the player needs to begin to dodge the different giant stomps the gigantic squid-like entity lets off. Players will want to be careful to dodge these attacks or face the consequences of having their character take a large amount of damage.
